Facebook launched a Spanish version of the site that for the first time allows hispanohablantes anywhere to sign up and browse the site in their native language. And now, anyone on Facebook can set their language preference for their account as well as select a language for sending invites to their friends.

What made this launch remarkable is that the site was translated by the Facebook community using an application developed by Facebook. Although other translation projects have used similar collaborative methods, the dynamic nature of the site, and the variety and richness of the content, made this project all the more challenging.

As a native hispanohablante and ingeniero in the internationalization team, I was particularly excited about this launch. During the weeks we fine-tuned the application, we received great feedback from the community of translators. It was also great to see the translators engage in lively and passionate discussions as to what the best translations should be for certain words and phrases.

Facebook currently has more than 2.8 million active users in España and America Latina, all who had signed up using the site in English. Today, we are making the site even more useful for them to connect with all of their friends. We've posted notifications to let these users know they can invite their amigos hispanohablantes to join Facebook.

In just a couple of days we have seen a significant growth in the number of users that have joined Facebook from countries in España and America Latina, including Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Facebook has always been about expanding who could use the site—from college campuses, to high school, to workplaces, to everyone with email. We expect this growth to continue as Spanish-speakers are now able to join in on the fun.

We are planning to launch French and German versions of the site next, and everyday we receive requests from the community to make more languages available for translating. Stay tuned for more posts from other members of the internationalization team, as we continue to make Facebook available to everyone, everywhere, in all languages.

Facebook teams up with FBI to probe 'malware attack'

Social networking site Facebook is working with the FBI to investigate a malware attack, a report has said.

Facebook said it was subjected to a 'sophisticated attack' by hackers last month, without saying where the attack originated.

Investigators have not found any evidence that user data was compromised, Facebook said on its website.

The malware infected laptops used by Facebook employees when they visited a mobile developer's website, the company said.

The attack affected other companies, Facebook said, without identifying them, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Facebook deletes objectionable photo, content

Facebook has deleted objectionable content posted on one of its pages on Friday, after the Hyderabad police officers sent a request for it.

The police also registered a case against unidentified persons for posting a morphed image and making objectionable comments too.

Facebook, Twitter abuzz with comments on Afzal Guru's hanging

News of hanging of Afzal Guru, the mastermind of attack on Parliament in India, saw a deluge of comments with many expressing delight while some condemning the capital punishment.

People kept on following Afzal Guru on the social websites and also posted comments. Maximum number of people commenting over the issue wrote that though the justice is met but it was a delayed one. Some wrote that 'justice delayed Is justice denied and same is the case here'. Certain comments praised President Pranab Mukherjee for rejecting the mercy plea of Afzal Guru.

The FB account holders also praised the strength of the family members of martyr's of Parliament attack who had protested against the government over delay in giving Afzal Guru capital punishment.

"This is a tribute to the victims of the parliament attack I am happy to hear this news. It made my day," tweeted Anurag Gupta, a theatre artist from Delhi.

"With Guru's hanging law has come a full circle. Justice delayed but not denied for a change," Shaleen Khan, a Mumbai-based advertising professional, posted on Facebook.

"Glad to hear the news about Afzal Guru. Terrorists must learn a lesson from this," Alka Singh from Lucknow posted on Facebook.

Sandhya Patil from Ahmedabad smelt a conspiracy. "Kasab hanged just before winter session...Afzal Guru hanged just before budget session! Coincidence?" she tweeted.

Activist Kiran Bedi tweeted: "Afzal Guru case needed a closure. It disturbs some and settles others! Always damned if u do, doomed if you don't! Governance is tough!"

However, author Taslima Nasreen did not support the capital punishment.

"Execution is the most easy task for the authority, let's force them to make the society better so that no Kasab, Guru, mullah can be born again."

Facebook having 50 million duplicate accounts worldwide

Popular Social networking site Facebook has said it is having approximately 50 million duplicate accounts besides 22 million of misclassified and undesirable accounts.

According to a Facebook's statement as on December 31, 2012, it has 1.06 billion monthly active users (MAUs) worldwide including 71 million in India.

Facebook Log In or Facebook Connect feature error

Facebook’s Log In or Connect feature which is used by many sites, was down with a bug today which caused the feature to crash and many users who attempted to use it got an error message.

The Log in or Connect feature tends to pop up when one visits news websites, such as Huffington Post The Daily Dot, etc where the sites asks users to log in via their Facebook account.

According to The Next Web, the bug was “dragging people from around the Internet, from news sites, to Hulu, even from Facebook’s own status page, to a page that simply states “An error occurred. Please try again later.”

Facebook later issued a statement saying, “For a short period of time, there was a bug that redirected people logging in with Facebook from third party sites to Facebook.com. The issue was quickly resolved, and Login with Facebook is now working as usual.”

But as The Next Web rightly points out, Facebook did not apologise for taking away millions of pageviews from its partners. Also, it did not say how it intends to never have this happen again.

The headline on Mashable seems to say it all. How Facebook briefly killed the Internet. The post states that while the bug only lasted less than 10 minutes, but it has highlighted just how many important websites use Facebook Connect for user authentication.

Facebook Graph Search - Facebook Social Search

Facebook Graph Search is a semantic search engine being rolled out by Facebook.It is designed to give answers to user natural language queries rather than a list of links.

The Facebook Graph Search feature combines the big data acquired from its over one billion users and external data into a search engine providing user-specific search results. In a presentation headed by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, it was announced that the Graph Search algorithm finds information from within a user's network of friends. Additional results will be provided by Microsoft's Bing search engine.

The feature was developed under former Google employees Lars Rasmussen and Tom Stocky.

Graph Search operates by use of a search algorithm similar to traditional search engines such as Google. However, the search feature is distinguished as a semantic search engine, searching based on intended meaning. Rather than returning results based on matching keywords, the search engine is designed to match phrases, as well as objects on the site. The service processes searches of up to 112 characters.

Search results are based on both the content of the user and their friends’ profiles and the relationships between the user and their friends. Results are based on the friends and interests expressed on Facebook, and also shaped by users’ privacy settings. In addition to being restricted from seeing some content, users may be able to view relevant content made publicly available by users that are not listed as friends.

Entries into the search bar are auto-completed as users type, with Facebook suggesting friends and second degree connections, Facebook pages, automatically-generated topics, and finally Web searches for anything Facebook is not yet able to search for.

The operation of the search feature depends on user involvement. The feature is intended to promote users to add more friends, more quickly. In doing so, it can provide updating, more data-rich results and stimulate use of the feature.
