Facebook got 10,000 requests for data from NSA in just six months (and Microsoft received 7,000 orders)

Facebook
Facebook and Microsoft were able to reveal limited information on Friday night about the government orders they have received to turn over user data to security agencies. Ted Ullyot, Facebook's general counsel, said in a statement that they had between 9,000 and 10,000 requests from all government entities, from local to federal, in the last six months of 2012. The orders involved the accounts of between 18,000 and 19,000 Facebook users on a broad range of surveillance topics, from missing children to terrorism. Microsoft said they had between 6,000 and 7,000 orders, affecting between 31,000 and 32,000 accounts, but downplayed how much they had revealed.

Facebook is now disclosing to the public the number of national security-related requests it received from the government for user data. Microsoft has released similar statistics. But Google has declined, saying it prefers a different approach.

Facebook hashtags - Facebook Start Twitter style hashtags for topics

Facebook Inc, the world's No 1 social network, has announced that it will adopt hashtags, one of the most recognisable features of its younger rival Twitter, in a move to position its web service as an important complement to television, sporting events and breaking news.

Facebook said on Wednesday that it will begin to roll out the feature on its social network, making it easier for users and advertisers to find hot spots of user activity around specific events or topics.

The hashtag, which appears as the # symbol and was first popularised on Twitter, enables users to follow specific topics of conversation within a social network's ever-changing stream of user comments.

Facebook en español

Facebook es una utilidad social que ayuda a las personas a comunicarse más eficazmente con sus amigos, familiares y compañeros de trabajo. Facebook te ayuda a comunicarte y compartir con las personas que forman parte de tu vida.

Facebook launched a Spanish version of the site that for the first time allows hispanohablantes anywhere to sign up and browse the site in their native language. And now, anyone on Facebook can set their language preference for their account as well as select a language for sending invites to their friends.

What made this launch remarkable is that the site was translated by the Facebook community using an application developed by Facebook. Although other translation projects have used similar collaborative methods, the dynamic nature of the site, and the variety and richness of the content, made this project all the more challenging.

As a native hispanohablante and ingeniero in the internationalization team, I was particularly excited about this launch. During the weeks we fine-tuned the application, we received great feedback from the community of translators. It was also great to see the translators engage in lively and passionate discussions as to what the best translations should be for certain words and phrases.

Facebook currently has more than 2.8 million active users in España and America Latina, all who had signed up using the site in English. Today, we are making the site even more useful for them to connect with all of their friends. We've posted notifications to let these users know they can invite their amigos hispanohablantes to join Facebook.

In just a couple of days we have seen a significant growth in the number of users that have joined Facebook from countries in España and America Latina, including Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Facebook has always been about expanding who could use the site—from college campuses, to high school, to workplaces, to everyone with email. We expect this growth to continue as Spanish-speakers are now able to join in on the fun.

We are planning to launch French and German versions of the site next, and everyday we receive requests from the community to make more languages available for translating. Stay tuned for more posts from other members of the internationalization team, as we continue to make Facebook available to everyone, everywhere, in all languages.
